Apple removed Inter•Poll from its prices lists as of September 1993. Beginning with ETO #13, it is being re-released on a no-charge, "as-is", and unsupported basis.
General Information
Inter•Poll™ provides a set of tools that help network administrators to manage their AppleTalk® network systems more efficiently and to provide greater network reliability for their users.
Installing and operating Inter•Poll will require the selection of a network administrator who is responsible for maintaining the network. Inter•Poll should be installed on the administrator's workstation and generally operated from that location (although network problems affecting this workstation may at times require Inter•Poll to be run from another location).
Any device on the network can be selected from one of the list windows and targeted for individual testing using loopback tests. This is a method that aids in localizing network faults by enabling test packets to be sent to a device. Three types of test packets can be sent: Echo, Printer (Printer Access Protocol or PAP), and System Information packets. Note that, though Inter•Poll does not prevent the user from sending any type of packet to any device, some device software may be unprepared to accept certain types of packets. It is recommended that only echo packets be sent to devices that are of unknown or unnamed type.
1) Inter•Poll: This is a Macintosh™ application that finds and displays all active devices connected to an AppleTalk network, or a subset as defined by search criteria. Inter•Poll will run on a Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, or Macintosh II computer with System file version 4.1 or later, or on a Macintosh IIx or a Macintosh SE/30 computer with System file version 6.0.3 or later. Inter•Poll will also run in the foreground of an AppleShare™ File Server version 2.0 or later. (Refer to AppleShare File Server's documentation for installation instructions.)
2) Network Mapping Symbols: This is a folder containing three PICT files with symbols for network devices and sample floor plans that help the network administrator to build an accurate network map and to keep it current. These files can be opened from a variety of graphics applications, including MacDraw.
In the System Folder:
3) Responder: This is the companion Macintosh INIT file to the Inter•Poll application. Inter•Poll works together with Responder to identify all active AppleTalk devices, including Macintosh, Apple // and MS-DOS workstations. Responder is installed into a Macintosh computer workstation by placing a copy of the Responder file into each workstation system folder and restarting. Be sure to remove any old versions that might be present when installing Responder.
